We Are the Bears! The Oral History of the Chicago Bears Richard Whittingham John Mullin Mike Singletary 9781629370088 Books Reviews

  • This book is a compilation of previously published material from "What Bears They Were" and variations of interviews from "What A Game They Played" by Richard Whittingham. So if you have those two books, save your money. If not, and you are a Bear and/or football fan, then treat yourself to a series of well written anecdotes from Bear greats and characters.

Familiar stories are refreshingly and concisely presented leaving the reader anxiously going to the next story. Personalities of unique characters such as Doug Adkins, Jim McMahon, and Dan Hampton are presented quite well. The early years of the NFL and Papa Bear are brought to vivid life through interviews with Joey Sternaman, Sid Luckman, Red Grange, Irv Kupcinet, George Connor, Dick Butkus, Doug Buffone and several others. The Bears Monsters of the Midway era is well represented as well as the Super Bowl XX era. Stories are succinct, interesting and often humorous. This collection is a quick easy read. Well worth the time.

Whittingham was an excellent writer. Would have loved have to have seen him publish an updated and revised his original illustrated encyclopedic history of the Bears before his passing. Highly recommend his previous Bears publications. This would be a great gift for any Bear fan. So don't be a Halas by throwing nickels around like they are manhole covers to quote Da Coach Mike Ditka
  • I enjoyed this book very much as I have enjoyed all of Mr. Whittingham' s books. Unfortunately there will not be any revisions or updates, as Mr. Whittingham died in 2005. He is an author I truly miss.
