Wiking Volume 3 May 1943 May 1945 French Edition Charles Trang Books Reviews

  • This final 567 page 3rd Volume begins with the transformation to Panzergrenadiere Division in May '43. Chapter 12 is 15 pages of text (again French only) with large officer lists & 11 pages of photos. Next is 40 pages of text, 30+ pages of pictures showing the defensive battles in summer of '43. Following is more defensive battles, crossing the Dneipr, Tcherkassy, Kowel, rest & refitting, more defensive battles summer of '44 Czechoslovakia to Poland, then finally in Chapter 20 Hungary to the end. Picture coverage is still very good, but the number drops the farther along we get in the book compared with previous volumes. Thinking the Germans had other priorities than making film at that point, but there are still some gems even from Hungary. Chapter 21 is a short Conclusion followed by 15 pages of Appendices.

The charts & captions are fairly usable without knowing French. For me the heart of this book is the pictures, most of which are unpublished from private collections and printed well on good paper. Period maps are throughout the book, some are useful, many are too cluttered & indistinct for my eyes even with a magnifying glass. 'Tis a shame the publisher no longer makes bi-lingual books. The book might be 5 stars if I could dig into the written word.
  • Amazing photos, most of which I have never seen before, with a multitude of facts such as who the company commanders were, but all of the text is very slow going since I dont actually speak french. If they ever have an English edition, Ill buy it...and give it five stars instead LOL.
  • Also as a footnote or whatever. If you own this volume, you also get most of the pictures from the RZM BOOK,KAMPFGRUPPE MUHLENKAMP.
The pictures are not as big as the RZM Book .But they 're still in the Wiking Book.I own both.

  • Once again Dr. Trang proves that he is a top-notch researcher.

The seller did a great job making sure that my book came safely. I appreciate that.
  • I have read this excellent book twice as this is the type of book that must be studied in detail. This 567-page book published by Heimdal covers the period May 1943 - May 1945. I believe that this is the best book that Charles Trang has ever produced. Trang brings together a tremendous amount of useful information from multiple sources and presents it in a chronological manner that is easy to understand. There is an interesting 4-page table that lists "Wiking" officers who later served in other divisions, listing their unit in "Wiking" and their unit in their new formation. A further 18 pages of tables provides a nearly complete listing of officer command assignments within the division during June 1943, July 1944 and January 1945. The photo quality is excellent with plenty of new and interesting photos. The author does an excellent job of identifying the people in the photos such a the photo of Hstuf. Paul Planitzer from the Sturmgeschütz Batterie attached to the Wallonie Brigade at Tscherkassy that was found at NARA. Extensive footnotes lead the reader to other useful resources. While it is unfortunate that the publisher did not make the extra effort to include an English language text in the book I was able to understand the French text with moderate difficulty. However, I suspect that this is more of a page count issue since Heimdal published the two-volume set on the "Götz von Berlichingen" Division back in 2004 with both French and English text
