Over the course of eleven decades, The Denver Dry Goods and its predecessor, McNamara Dry Goods, proudly served Coloradoans, who knew they could "shop with confidence" for the best quality at the fairest prices. Much more than the goods it sold, the store was a major institution that touched the lives of nearly every Denverite. Comforting culinary traditions like Chicken ala King in the vast fifth-floor tearoom and breakfast with Santa delighted locals. Festive chandeliers adorned the four-hundred-foot-long main aisle during the holidays, and longtime salesclerks knew customers by name. Devoted patrons dearly missed all that charm after the doors closed in 1987. Mark Barnhouse explores the fascinating history and cherished memories of Denver's most beloved department store.

The Denver Dry Goods Where Colorado Shopped with Confidence Landmarks Mark A Barnhouse Books Reviews
- This is a very well-written and illustrated book about a fine department store that is sorely missed. I think that the author did a masterful job in conveying the history, and more importantly, the "sense" of the Denver Dry Goods Co. It is also exceptionally well-illustrated - and as an author myself, I know how hard it can be to find and choose illustrations for these types of books. Really an excellent book, highly enjoyable for those that knew the store . . . and even those that didn't!!.
- As a former employee, I was happy to see the elegant Denver Dry Goods commemorated in this book. I have wonderful memories of shopping there at Christmas as a child; lunch at The Tea Room was always a treat. My parents and grandparents also enjoyed shopping there. When my family moved away from Denver and then reassembled my father's childhood maple beds (that stood up very well for three generations), I found Denver Dry Goods stamped on the bed rails. It brought a smile, but also sadness that the store is now closed. I'm pleased that the building has been well preserved; I can still see my grandfather's custom metal work on the roof line. SBR
- I enjoyed this well done book so much. The story of Dennis Seedy alone was so revealing about that time in American history. I love department store history because I was a buyer for one and it seems as though they vanished over night. Not that I would trade what we have today to go back to the old days.
I was quite impressed with the research done by Mark A. Barnhouse. Well done! - Reading this with my book group. I shopped at the Denver and loved that store. Interesting read on a historical place in Denver. Also history of the people that started the city of Denver and helped to make it what it is today.
- If I would have had the time to read it in one sitting I would have. I grew up in Denver and did not know most of what is in this book. Mr Barnhouse made history so interesting . I was disappointed when it ended.
- For anyone with ties to Denver, this brings back some great memories.
- great read for Denver natives
- This was an excellent book with interesting history of The Denver and Denver history. The author failed to mention Montaldos. I know many a girl who got her prom or wedding dress from that store as well.
